Michael Twyman 1934–2025
Michael Twyman, a founding member of the Society along with James Mosley (see news September 2025), died on 27 October at the age of 91. Michael graduated in Fine Art at the University of Reading and spent his career there. He was responsible for introducing the first BA honours course in Typography & Graphic Communication in 1968, and through that the university department of the same name that followed a few years later. His article ‘The tinted lithograph’ appeared in the first number of the Society’s Journal in 1965 and the subject of lithography became the one for which he is best known. He also wrote on the wider history of printing, on ephemera, and on the theory of graphic language, continuing to research and publish frequently for the rest of his life. The recent Journal number dedicated to his writing (third series number 5, 2024) includes a bibliography.
