Tercentenary of the Old Library, Trinity College, Dublin

As part a series of events to celebrate the tercentenary of the Old Library at Trinity College, Dublin, there is to be a one-day conference entitled Building Collections, 300 years of the Old Library on Monday 25 June 201 at the Thomas Davis Theatre, Trinity College. APHA 2012 Annual Conference - Call for Papers

The American Printing History Association welcomes proposals for its 2012 annual conference, whose theme will be ‘At the Crossroads: Living Letterform Traditions’. The conference is at Columbia College Chicago, Center for Book and Paper Arts, 12–13 October 2012. The main proceedings will take place on the Saturday, 13 October. Full details will be available at the website of the American Printing History Association.

The organisers wish to encourage submission of proposals for talks or panels about: letterforms (including non-European), writing and type, type design and manufacture, tools for making letters such pen and graver, and equipment such as printing presses. The organisers would also welcome proposals for talks about people working in these different fields such as type designers and typographers, calligraphers, type founders, and printers known for their typography; and talks on education and training, including formal programs of study and influential teachers.

Proposals are due by March 15, 2012. All proposals must be submitted electronically as a Microsoft Word attachment (.doc or .docx format) or pdf file to aphaconference2012@gmail.com. Proposals should be single-spaced with one-inch margins in 12-pt. Times New Roman.

Proposal guidelines:
We solicit proposals for 20-minute presentations or 50-min panels (maximum 400 words). Please include the following information, all centred on the page:
Line 1: Three to four keywords to aid presentation scheduling
Line 2: Author
Line 3: Presentation title
Line 4: Blank
Line 5: All contact info: mailing address, phone number, email
Line 6 to end: Text of proposal
End: Short biography (maximum 100 words)

APHA membership must be current at the time of registration for all presenters.

Printing workshops and courses in Oxford, UK

The Bodleian Hand Printing Workshop at The Story Museum is launching a spring programme of hands-on sessions for both families and adults, starting in February 2012. Visitors will learn about the history and techniques of letterpress printing, hand set a short text and print it as a keepsake.

Family printing workshops
2–4 pm Saturday 25 February
2–4 pm Saturday 24 March
2–4 pm Saturday 28 April
2–4 pm Saturday 26 May
Cost: £8 per person. Age 8 plus. Children up to 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Adult printing workshop
7-9 pm Tuesday 27 March
Cost: £15 per person. Age 16 plus

Hand printing course
7-9 pm Tuesdays: six sessions, from 10 April. An exciting workshop for beginners or those with some knowledge of printing and graphic design. Learn techniques, print and bind a small book. Cost £120 per person for six sessions. Age 16 plus.

Creative Letterpress Workshop in Florence, Italy

This June Firenze Arti Visive School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy, is sponsoring a Creative Letterpress Poster Workshop guided by the letterpress printer, papermaker and builder of artist's books Amos Paul Kennedy Jr.

Participants will be using metal and wood types, inks, manual and antique presses, sharing a unique and well-equipped print studio. A combination between traditional and contemporary methods will challenge participants to create personal and innovative print artwork.

2012 NEH Summer Seminar, Tudor Books and Readers: 1485-1603

The 2012 US National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar for college and university teachers has been announced. From 18 June to 20 July 2012 John N. King of The Ohio State University and Mark Rankin of James Madison University will direct the seminar on the manufacture and dissemination of printed books and the nature of reading during the era of the Tudor monarchs (1485-1603). The programme, which is open to US citizens, and to non-US citizens who have lived and taught in the USA for at least three years, will visit Antwerp, London and Oxford.
